Michael AsburyDr Michael Asbury is a core member of the Research Centre for Transnational Art Identity and Nation (TrAIN), University of Arts, London. His PhD thesis is entitled 'Hélio Oiticica: politics and ambivalence in 20th century Brazilian art'; he has authored various articles, translations and reviews and has curated and organised a number of exhibitions. As a reflection of his research interests, his contribution to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue encompasses works by members of the Neoconcretist movement, and by artists associated with the 1967 exhibition New Brazilian Objectivity.
Maria Clara BernalDr Maria Clara Bernal lives and works in Bogotá, Colombia, where she directs an MA programme in Contemporary Art and Theory at the Universidad de los Andes, and coordinates the Latin American Initiative led by Arts Council organisation, Visiting Arts. Maria Clara completed her doctorate at the University of Essex, acting as Curatorial Advisor & Assistant for UECLAA. Her contribution to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue includes a concise history of twentieth century Colombian art, and texts on several works by contemporary Colombian artists: donated to the collection with Maria Clara's advice and assistance.
Christiana DiamesiChristiana Diamesi completed her MA in Gallery Studies at the University of Essex (2003-4) and acted as an archival assistant for UECLAA. She lives in London, where she works at the Whitechapel Art Gallery and SPACE Studios.
Cecilia Fajardo-HillDr Cecilia Fajardo-Hill is a Venezuelan/British art historian and curator of contemporary art. She completed her doctorate at the University of Essex in 2003, and is currently Director of the Cisneros Fontanels Art Foundation, Miami. Cecilia was invited to contribute a concise history of twentieth century Venezuelan art to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue.

Terri GeisTerri Geis is currently working towards the completion of her PhD thesis, 'An analysis of the career and paintings of Maria Izquierdo 1928-1955', at the University of Essex. Writing on works by Rufino Tamayo and Juan Soriano, her contribution to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue relates to her research interest in modern Mexican painting.
Joanne HarwoodDr Joanne Harwood is a graduate of the University of Essex's Latin American Studies BA and the Department of Art History and Theory's MA in Latin American Art and Architecture. She completed her PhD thesis, ?Disguising Ritual: A Re-assessment of Part 3 of the Codex Mendoza' in 2002. Having supported UECLAA as a Curatorial Assistant & Advisor since the collection's inception in 1993, Joanne was Senior Research Officer for UECLAA OnLine before accepting the position of Curator of Latin American Collections at the British Library. Joanne Harwood has made an extensive contribution to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue. Many of the entries she has written relate to her interest in connections between contemporary and pre-Columbian art, others stem from personal correspondence with UECLAA artists; she commissioned and translated several of the catalogue's Artists' Statements.
Lucy HavardLucy Havard is completing an MA in the Department of Art History and Theory and has recently worked as an intern at the ICA and at Tate Modern, where she worked on the Frida Kahlo exhibition. As a research assistant for the UECLAA OnLine project she has contributed biographical entries on Mexican and Cuban artists.
Jennifer JostenJennifer Josten completed an MA in Contemporary Art at the University of Essex, working as Curatorial Assistant & Advisor for UECLAA. She was awarded a Distinction for her thesis on the work of Gabriel Orozco, and in Autumn 2005 will join the PhD programme at the University of Yale. One of her areas of research is modern and contemporary art in Cuba, and her contribution to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue includes a concise history of twentieth century Cuban art.
Ángel KalenbergÁngel Kalenberg has been Director of the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales del Uruguay in Montevideo since 1969. He is active as a curator and critic, and acts as Commissary for Uruguayan art represented in the Biennales of Sao Paulo, Venice, Paris, Porto Alegre and Lima. He was invited to contribute a concise history of twentieth century Uruguayan art to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue.
Hannah HudsonHannah Hudson is a graduate of the University of Essex's Latin American Studies BA; while completing her MA in the Department of Art History and Theory she has acted as an archival and research assistant for the UECLAA OnLine project.
Panajota KaratsikiPanajota Karatsiki completed her MA in Gallery Studies at the University of Essex (2003-4) and acted as an archival assistant for UECLAA. She is now based in London where she has worked on projects for the Pilot International Art Forum and the Lawrence O'Hana Gallery. She currently works for the Whitechapel Gallery and The Agency.
Virginie KastelVirginie Kastel is a graduate of the University of Essex's History of Art BA; while completing her MA in the Department of Art History and Theory she has acted as an archival and research assistant for the UECLAA OnLine project.
Carlos MolinaCarlos Molina is currently working towards the completion of his PhD thesis, 'Curatorial Practice in Mexico during the 19th and 20th centuries', at the University of Essex. Carlos Molina was invited to contribute a concise history of twentieth century Mexican art to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue.
Valeria PazValeria Paz is Curator at the Museo Nacional de Arte, La Paz, Bolivia. She is active in Bolivia as an art historian and art critic, and represents the country at international biennales and colloquia. She has published several monographs and surveys of contemporary Bolivian art, including 'Arte Contemporáneo Boliviano' (La Paz: Fundación Simón I. Patiño, 2001). Valeria Paz was invited to contribute a concise history of twentieth century Bolivian art to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue.
Gabriel Perez-BarreiroDr Gabriel Perez-Barreiro was the founding curator of UECLAA. In this capacity he organised several important projects including an early solo exhibition of work by Jorge Macchi. He completed a PhD in the Department of Art History & Theory, and his research interest in Constructivism led to the donation of important works by artists including Maria Freire and Gyula Kosice. Gabriel Perez-Barreiro is now Curator of Latin American Art at the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas at Austin.
Helena PastorizaHelena Pastoriza is currently studying for an MA in Latin American Art & Architecture at the University of Essex, and works with UECLAA as Curatorial Assistant & Advisor.
Natalia PollakNatalia Pollak is Head of the Department of Exhibitions (overseeing the development of national and international temporary exhibitions) at the Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM-INBA) Mexico City. Natalia Pollak was invited to contribute a concise history of twentieth century Chilean art to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue.
Luis Rebaza-SoraluzDr Luis Rebaza-Soraluz is Senior Lecturer in Latin-American Poetry & Art at King's College London. Luis Rebaza-Soraluz research interests include modern art and poetry in Peru, and he was invited to contribute a concise history of twentieth century Peruvian art to the UECLAA OnLine catalogue.
Gabriela SalgadoGabriela Salgado is UECLAA's Collection Curator. Since 1999 Gabriela has curated several exhibitions with UECLAA works in University Gallery and other venues, such as Gallery 32 in London, and encouraged artist's residencies and collaborations with institutions in the UK and abroad. She is currently working in the research of her PhD thesis on the work of Argentine artist León Ferrari. Her contribution to the Online catalogue comprises the entries for León Ferrari, Demián Flores, Guillermo Kuitca, Chico Tabibuia and Esteban Alvarez (see UECLAA People page for further information)
Daniel UsabiagaDaniel Usabiaga completed his PhD thesis 'Architecture and Simulated Environments' at the University of Essex in 2004, and he now lives and works as a writer and translator in Mexico City.
Isobel WhiteleggIsobel Whitelegg completed her PhD thesis 'A Radical Passivity, Mira Schendel: Towards Another History of the Brazilian Sixties' at the University of Essex in 2004. She has supported UECLAA as Curatorial Assistant & Advisor since joining the University in 1999, and is currently Senior Research Officer for UECLAA OnLine. In this capacity she has written extensively about UECLAA artists and artworks and commissioned, edited and translated external contributions and Artists' Statements. Her particular contribution to the catalogue includes the development of the UECLAApedia and the UECLAA OnLine concise history of twentieth century Brazilian art.
